Three Reasons to Care about Student Motivation

In this lesson, I dive into why we should care about student motivation, especially when it comes to fostering the value belief.

  • First, I explain that student demotivation feels like deep pain—no one wants to feel that way, and the good news is that we can help.
  • Second, I make the point that you simply can’t do school without student motivation. Motivation is what drives students to put in the work and care needed to master difficult subjects. While you can coerce someone into doing work, you can’t force them to care. That’s where motivation comes in.
  • And the third reason we should care is that motivation is malleable—we can create environments that cultivate motivation and student care in our classrooms.

In the next video, we’ll dive into the Five Key Beliefs framework that will help you do just that.
